The Gyrotonic carved wood apparatus allows unique freedom of movement uninterrupted without a beginning or an end as the exercises travel in spiral or circular paths. The Gyrotonic Expansion System was designed around the human body encouraging the mover to find balance between lengthening outwards and retracting inwards towards the body’s core. In this way, stability is attained through a counterbalance of opposing forces. Gyrotonic exercises train the mover to think and move around the joints (scooping) to create greater space in the socket to free up movement of overly compressed joints. One of the distinguishing features of Gyrotonic work is the three-dimensional quality of the movement. The exercises involve all three planes of movement: frontal, sagittal and horizontal direction.
